The vines that make this wine were planted in 1785, decades before phylloxera reached Europe, and they are still producing today — which makes Cepas Vellas ("old vines") one of the most extraordinary Albariños on earth before you even pull the cork. It is a single 1.5-hectare plot directly in front of the winery in Meaño, in the Val do Salnés, trained on the traditional Galician pergola and rooted in sábrego — sandy, decomposed granite a short walk from the Atlantic. Gerardo Méndez, son of the village blacksmith who gave the estate its name, spent decades insisting Albariño belonged among the world's great whites and helped found the Rías Baixas denomination in 1988; his children Manu and Encarna now hand-farm the family's plots. The 2023 was destemmed and given a five-hour cold soak on skins for texture, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, then left eleven months on its lees without stirring. Unlike most of the category, this one rewards patience — it will keep improving for a decade or more.
