A decade on, this is Crozes-Hermitage drinking exactly where it should be. Domaine Belle is a small Northern Rhône estate run by Philippe Belle, who took the reins in 2003 — the family had sold their grapes to the local Tain l'Hermitage cooperative since 1933 (when Louis Belle joined); Albert began making wine again, and Philippe founded Domaine Belle in 1990. Cuvée Louis Belle is their flagship, named for the patriarch (Philippe's grandfather), who actually joined the local Tain l'Hermitage cooperative in 1933; the modern domaine was founded by Philippe in 1990 after Albert took over from Louis, drawn from Syrah vines ranging 20 to 100 years old. The wine is fermented with native yeasts, partially destemmed, and raised 16-18 months in a mix of new and used barrels. 2015 was a benchmark across the Northern Rhône — concentrated, structured, built to age — and ten years in bottle have done exactly what you'd hope: smoothed the tannins, deepened the aromatics, and pushed the wine squarely into its window without sacrificing any tension. A serious bottle from a quietly excellent address.

"Bright magenta. Expansive aromas of dark berry liqueur, exotic spices, vanilla and candied flowers pick up a smoky nuance as the wine opens up. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering intense oak-spiced cassis and blueberry flavors and a hint of violet. Finishes seamless and long, with an echo of juicy blue fruit and well-knit tannins that add subtle grip." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2015 Crozes Hermitage Cuvee Louis Belle is cedary and rich, full-bodied and amply endowed with dark berry fruit and velvety tannins. It does show too much oak to be truly classic, but it's hedonistically delicious in a clean, modern style. It has a decade or more of pleasure ahead of it." —Joe Czerwinski

Wine Spectator

"A warm, inviting style, with lush raspberry, plum and boysenberry preserve flavors gliding through, laced liberally with cocoa and warm tobacco accents. A flash of iron keeps this honest enough, while the fruit drips through the finish. Drink now through 2021."

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Northern Rhône Syrah at maturity wants serious meats — grilled lamb chops with herbes de Provence, hanger steak with peppercorn sauce, braised short ribs, duck breast with cherries, or a slab of aged Saint-Nectaire.

Tasting Profile

Mature and expressive — black cherry, plum, cracked pepper, smoked meat, violet, and crushed stone. The tannins are silky-resolved, the acidity bright, the finish long, savory, and laced with that Northern Rhône iron-mineral edge.
