The Slovenian half of one of Styria's great hills: Ciringa sits directly across the border from Tement's famous Zieregg vineyard, on the same coralline limestone, and the wines come at a fraction of what the Austrian side commands. The vines run from 340 to 480 meters, in loose brown topsoil over that limestone, and much of the work is done by hand simply because tractors can't get onto the steeper sections. Farming here has been organic and biodynamic from the outset — certified organic in 2019, biodynamic certification following — with density around 5,000 vines per hectare. If you've been paying up for limestone-driven Chardonnay from more famous addresses, this is the border-crossing that pays off.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with orchard fruit — yellow apple, pear — plus a little citrus and a chalky, stony edge from the limestone. Finishes clean and mineral rather than rich or buttery.
