2005 was Pascal Marchand's last vintage at Domaine de la Vougeraie, the estate he built into a reference as its founding winemaker from 1999 — and grand cru Corton in a year that good is about as good a farewell as Burgundy offers. The Clos du Roi parcel runs to just under half a hectare on an east-facing slope, planted in 1951 and 1952 at 10,000 vines per hectare, on the red, iron-laden, pebbly clay that gives this climat its mineral bite. Vougeraie has farmed organically since its creation in 1999, essentially from day one, and works biodynamically with teas of nettle, horsetail, yarrow and comfrey. 2005 delivered concentration and acidity at once across the Côte d'Or, and at twenty-one years this is right where a grand cru Corton should be. From a private cellar; decant it and give it a large glass.
