Wild boar ate roughly thirty percent of the crop in 2016, and because they went for the Syrah, this bottle is an outlier at Trevallon: sixty percent Cabernet Sauvignon to forty percent Syrah, rather than the even split the estate is built on. It was also the domaine's fortieth vintage. Eloi Durrbach planted these north-facing limestone slopes beneath the Alpilles in 1973 and farmed organically from day one; when the local appellation moved to cap Cabernet at twenty percent, he walked away from it, which is why one of the south of France's great reds wears a humble IGP Alpilles label. The method has not changed: whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts, then more than two years in foudre with minimal racking. At ten years old this is where Trevallon drinkers wait for the wine to arrive, primary fruit giving way to anise, licorice, cedar and dried herbs with the tannins settled. Decant an hour before serving; there is another decade in it.

Eloi Dürrbach planted the first vines here in 1973 on Provence's Alpilles limestone, creating what would become an iconic estate. His mantra—"the less you do, the wine"—still guides 15 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. His wife Floriane and their children continue the philosophy of minimal intervention and maximum integrity.

Tasting Profile

Blackcurrant and wild blackberry with anise, licorice, cedar and Provencal herbs. Full-bodied but fresh, the tannins fine and largely resolved, finishing long and savory.
