A first vintage from a brand-new address, and they started with one of Anjou's serious Chenin parcels. Pauline and Lionel founded Domaine des Grouas in July 2022 at Martigné-Briand, where the Anjou Noir and Anjou Blanc meet along the Layon, and among their fourteen hectares are 2.7 hectares of Les Ongles. The parcel is schist, the dark rock of Anjou Noir, and it gives a Chenin that is taut and stony rather than fleshy. Lionel came to wine sideways, training in viticulture and oenology after other careers and working at Bellivière and Ogereau before setting up on his own; the vineyards have been certified organic since 2018 and the cellar work is deliberately minimal, with a quiet raising in demi-muids so the schist does the talking. New domaines with parcels this good do not stay quiet for long.
