Hermitage is one of the legendary names of the Northern Rhône, and Cuvée Emilie is the flagship Syrah from Domaine des Remizières, the Mercurol family estate run by the Desmeure family for three generations. The cuvée — named for Philippe Desmeure's daughter, who now runs the winemaking — debuted in 1995 and represents the estate's most ambitious work, sourced from the great Hermitage hill and aged in new oak. This is the 2007 vintage, now fully mature: the new oak that frames this wine in youth has long since folded into the fruit, leaving a savory, tertiary Syrah at its peak. A rare chance to drink top-tier Hermitage with real bottle age. Decant it, pour it into big glasses, and give it the meal it deserves.
