Fifteen years on, this is the argument for Moulin-à-Vent as the most serious of the Beaujolais crus. Diochon's Vieilles Vignes comes from vines planted between 1920 and the 1960s on pink granite and sandstone over a manganese-rich subsoil, vinified traditionally with whole clusters in concrete, given only a minute dose of sulfur and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bernard Diochon, who took over from his father in 1967, chose Thomas Patenôtre as his successor in 2007 specifically to keep those methods intact. 2011 was a warm, early vintage in Beaujolais that gave ripe, generous wines, and this bottle has spent the years since in a private cellar: the tannins have melted and the fruit has turned savory and tertiary. Drink it over the next couple of years rather than cellaring it further, with a decanter and a proper meal.
