Domaine du Meix Foulot has long been one of the quiet greats of the Côte Chalonnaise, crafting serious, cellar-worthy wines from some of Mercurey’s best sites. Their crown jewel? The Clos du Château de Montaigu, a walled, 1er Cru monopole vineyard that wraps around the domaine’s château—exclusively theirs to farm and vinify.

The 2016 vintage shows the domaine's classical, restrained style at its best. It's pure Pinot—lifted and spicy, with notes of red cherry, rose petal, tea leaf, and just a touch of forest floor. Aged in mostly older oak, it balances freshness and savory depth, with fine tannins and the kind of graceful evolution that speaks to thoughtful farming and traditional élevage.

This isn’t flashy or modern Burgundy—it’s precise, mineral, and layered, with the kind of quiet confidence that rewards careful listening (and drinking). Still youthful in structure, it’s drinking beautifully now with a decant and will continue to open up over the next few years.

Pair with: roast duck, wild mushroom dishes, or soft cheeses with a little funk.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

BH 90
"Pretty red and dark pinot fruit-scented nose. The cool, refined and attractively energetic middle weight flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration and ample minerality on the sneaky long finish that clearly signals that this wine is built-to-age."

Robert Parker

RP 92
"The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Château de Montaigu is the king of the cellar, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of ripe cherries, wild berries, grilled meat and incipient hints of rich forest floor. It's medium to full-bodied, with the most mid-palate amplitude and structural elegance of all the domaine's wines, its fine-grained tannins largely concealed by a deep core of juicy fruit." -William Kelley

Wine Enthusiast

WE 91
"Ripe, perfumed and juicy, this generously textured wine is moving towards a velvet phase. Ripe red-cherry flavors and acidity are there as well as the tannins. It comes from a five-acre walled vineyard." -Roger Voss

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
everything you need to know about Bourgogne is just a click away!
