Cru Beaujolais that drinks like serious Burgundy's fun cousin. Pierre-Marie Chermette's Domaine du Vissoux is a longtime Flatiron favorite, and Les Trois Roches is his flagship Moulin-a-Vent, sourced from roughly 50-year-old Gamay vines across three granite-and-manganese parcels (Rochegres, La Rochelle, Roche Noire) that lend finesse, power, and lively fruit in turn. Traditional semi-carbonic vinification with native yeasts, then aging in old foudres and barrels. The 2014 vintage was fresh and energetic, and with a decade in bottle this has picked up the savory, almost Pinot-like complexity that good Moulin-a-Vent earns with age. Drinking well now.

"Vivid ruby. Assertive dark berry and floral pastille aromas show very good energy, with a spicy nuance adding complexity. Juicy and pliant, offering sweet, nicely concentrated blackberry and cherry flavors and a of touch of spicecake. Dusty tannins build slowly on a long, smooth and impressively persistent finish, with the dark fruit and spice notes echoing." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2014 Moulin-à-Vent Les Trois Roches is drinking well, offering up a deep bouquet of dark fruits, rich spices and loamy soil that’s just a touch too obviously oak-inflected to my taste, despite only 10% of the fûts being new. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated and youthfully chewy, in keeping with the somewhat sternly classic profile of the vintage. For whatever reason, this vintage is more marked by oak than is typical for this cuvée, but while I would have loved to see this wine matured in entirely neutral wood, it’s a very creditable performance in its style." —William Kelley

More about Domaine du Vissoux (Pierre-Marie Chermette)

Pierre-Marie Chermette took over the family domain in 1982 and produces Beaujolais the traditional way: whole-cluster, semi-carbonic ferments in old foudres, no chaptalization or added yeast, aging in wood. His Fleurie 'Les Garants' is structured, dense, generous with black plum and cherry fruit. This is a fifth-generation grower with 100+ year-old vines, all under $20.
