The muscular one, and the vineyard the Faiveley family bought first. Les Porets Saint-Georges lies just south of the village of Nuits, next to the celebrated Les Saint-Georges, on deep, stony brown limestone soils that Dr. Lavalle already ranked among the very best in Nuits in his 1855 survey; the domaine's 1.68-hectare parcel was the family's original purchase back in the 1870s. It has always made a powerful, structured, frankly tannic wine, which is exactly why 2010 suits it: frost and a poor flowering cut the crop to almost nothing, small thick-skinned berries and a cool season kept acidity high, and the resulting transparency keeps all that power in balance. Sixteen months in French oak, a little under half of it new. Sixteen years on, the tannins have resolved and this back-vintage bottle is only now hitting its stride -- decant it.
