Coteau de Vernon is Condrieu's flagship single vineyard, and Georges Vernay's family is largely responsible for putting it on the map. Francis Vernay planted the slope back in the 1930s — those are now the oldest Viognier vines in the appellation — and Georges and his daughter Christine spent decades reconstructing the terraces and rehabilitating the vineyard. Yields are tiny, the slope is brutally steep, and the wine sees patient barrel aging on the lees. The result is Condrieu at its most serious: a wine of weight, mineral depth, and ageworthy structure that rewrites what Viognier is capable of. This is one of the few Condrieus that genuinely needs (and rewards) a decade in the cellar. A landmark wine from a landmark site.
