A step up the d'Angerville ladder without committing to a named cru. This is the domaine's premier cru blend, drawn from its parcels in Les Mitans and Les Pitures with young vines from the grander sites folded in — more depth and a firmer frame than the village Volnay, still short of the breadth of Champans or the tension of the Clos des Ducs monopole. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is Volnay's defining estate: Sem d'Angerville broke with the négociants and pioneered estate bottling here in the 1920s, and the family farms more than eleven hectares of the village's premier cru land biodynamically, using its own Pinot d'Angerville selection. Everything stays in the house register of silk and perfume rather than muscle. 2010 was a classic, precise vintage prized for balance and freshness, and at sixteen years this back-vintage bottle is in a lovely window with more ahead.
