Clos des Ducs belongs to the d'Angerville family and nobody else — 2.15 walled hectares climbing the slope directly behind the family house, and the summit of the domaine's range. The soil is poor, stony and strongly calcareous on a steep southeast pitch, and it gives the estate's most structured, longest-lived wine: firmer and more upright than the perfumed charm Volnay is usually known for, and a clear step beyond the breadth of Champans or the village and premier cru bottlings below it. The domaine has been the reference point for precisely made Volnay since Sem d'Angerville began estate bottling in the 1920s, and it converted to biodynamics in 2006. 1998 was a tricky Burgundy year — a hot August, September rain, a narrow harvest window — but the successful wines came out with real color and structure, and structure is what this site has always had in surplus. Nearly thirty years on it is fully mature: savory rather than fruity, the tannins long since unwound, the underlying tension now the point. From a private cellar, ready to drink, and no need to overthink the decant.

"A highly perfumed nose exhibits notes of rose petal, stone, underbrush and a hint of crushed green leaves. There is good richness yet excellent precision to the impressively intense and energetic flavors where the supporting tannins are still very firm. There is good power and focus to the ever-so-slightly dry finish that manages to avoid any suggestion of overt astringency. This isn't a Ducster of charm or finesse but I very much like the overall sense of depth. This could be enjoyed now with the appropriate foods though for my taste I would continue to cellar it for another few years first. Interestingly, I opened a bottle from my own storage recently and it displayed none of the dryness I mention in the above note nor was there any firmness to the finish. This is somewhat curious as I have had the '98 Ducster many times and I have never seen this 'roundness' before."

"The 1998 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru is a vintage that I have not encountered before. It would have been made by Guillaume d'Angerville's father and the style is very different to nowadays. Very herbal and rustic on the nose, there is a slight metallic veneer here. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, grippy and broad-shouldered with a mulberry and a slight vegetal note on the finish. Not bad, but not really befitting this vineyards. Tasted at the annual Marquis d'Angerville tasting in London." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.
