The most structured Volnay in the d'Angerville lineup, from a warm and generous vintage. Taillepieds takes its name from the sharp-edged pebbles that wore out vineyard workers' shoes — a steep, stony, thin-soiled site on the upper slope of Volnay that produces wines of unusual seriousness and reserve for the commune. The relatively high altitude gives it a more savory, structured character than nearby Caillerets, and Guillaume d'Angerville (biodynamic since 2006, at the helm since his father Jacques passed in 2003) draws out that intensity with the domaine's signature restrained hand. 2018 was warm and generous; the result is a Volnay with the texture and lift the appellation is famous for, but with extra spine and concentration — drinking well now with the architecture to evolve over the next decade and beyond.

"The 2018 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru comes from vines located high up on the hill at the same altitude as Clos des Ducs in a windy location. This has the most precocious bouquet among d’Angerville’s Volnays, with blueberry, cassis and iodine aromas billowing from the glass. The palate is built around a sweet core of slightly confit fruit. An unusually outgoing and approachable Les Taillepieds that is full of joie-de-vivre. Whether it has the intellectual element of, say, the Clos des Ducs or the Champans is another matter.
