La Pièce sous le Bois is exactly what the name says — the piece under the woods — and Matrot's parcel sits high on the slope where the forest presses in, lending the wine a wild, dark-cherry edge you won't find further down. The family has held this parcel since Claude Matrot bought it in 1900, and their Blagny has always been the sort of Burgundy that rewards patience instead of begging for attention. This is a 2002, a vintage that has aged with real grace, and the wine is now fully mature: earth, dried cherry, forest floor and gentle spice, with the tannins long since folded away.
