Frost on the nights of April 5th through 8th, 2021 wiped out most of what Volnay was going to make that year, which is why there is so little of this wine. What the growers salvaged turned into the freshest, most transparent red Burgundy in a decade: a cool, damp season with heavy mildew pressure, a harvest that came in around September 20th, nearly a month later than 2020, and wines with moderate alcohol, high acidity and red rather than black fruit. This is old-school Volnay, and it suits Lafarge perfectly, since Frederic and daughter Clothilde have never chased power in the first place. The village bottling comes from Les Famines, Les Buttes and Cros Martin, roughly 60-year-old vines on clay-limestone farmed under Ecocert organic and Demeter biodynamic certification, fully destemmed, fermented on ambient yeasts and aged 18 months in used barrels with no fining or filtration. It's lovely to drink already and has the acidity to hold well into the next decade.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2021 Volnay Village has a bright but classically-styled bouquet with tertiary, tobacco-tinged red fruit, the oak neatly integrated (though there is no new wood here.) The palate is medium-bodied, open and generous with grainy tannins, fine acidity and a saline finish. Maybe a little monochrome compared to other vintages, but it should give a decade's drinking pleasure." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"There's just one cuvée of 2021 Volnay Village chez Lafarge this year, and it's an attractive wine, exhibiting aromas of raspberries, rose petals and loamy soil, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy and mouthwatering palate." —William Kelley

Jancis Robinson

"Cask sample. Bright, dark-mid ruby. Seems very Volnay in its velvety, suave fruit. Very floral nose. Lacks a bit of punch on the mid palate and not showing great length. It’s very pretty though."

More about Domaine Michel Lafarge

Michel Lafarge is Burgundy royalty—one of the greatest names in the game. His Aligoté comes from nearly 90-year-old vines (almost extinct elsewhere in Burgundy), planted in 1937. Whole-cluster pressed, fermented in steel with indigenous yeasts, aged in older barrels. It opens with honeysuckle and yuzu and tastes like centuries of tradition in a glass.
