This is the jewel of Patrice Rion's domaine: Clos Saint-Marc is a monopole, meaning Rion is the sole owner, and at just under one hectare it's the smallest monopole in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The vineyard sits on deep brown soil over a bedrock of white and yellow marl, which holds water and stamps a distinct character on the wine. As a Premier Cru in Nuits-Saint-Georges, expect Pinot Noir with that village's classic structure and dark-fruited grip—here with the polish Rion brings. The 2023 is young and demands patience; cellar it or decant generously. A rare bottling from a tiny, walled plot.

There is a similar mouthfeel as well if more size, weight and muscle to the saline, serious, more youthfully austere and compact finale. "The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St. Marc 1er Cru, a monopole belonging to the Domaine, includes 25-30% whole bunches. This feels a little more animated and energetic than the Clos des Argillières, with more red fruit, crushed stone and lightly pressed flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. There is a sense of "fluidity" in this Clos Saint-Marc, which displays gentle grip, lovely poise and weight toward the spicy finish. This is the Domaine's standout cuvée in 2023—superb." —Neal Martin
