Batard-Montrachet is the Grand Cru of breadth: it lies below Le Montrachet on deeper, gravelly ground, and it fills the mouth in a way no premier cru quite manages. Morey-Coffinet's holding is a 0.13-hectare sliver at the upper edge of the Grand Cru on the Chassagne side, planted in 1996 and amounting to a couple of barrels a year. Thibault Morey runs the nine-hectare family domaine his parents Michel Morey and Fabienne Coffinet founded in 1980, farming biodynamically since 2015 and certified organic (Ecocert) since 2018; this is raised sixteen months in 350-litre barrels and bottled unfiltered. 2024 was a wet, mildew-ridden growing season rescued by a sunny August and a dry September, and the whites that emerged are precise and moderate in alcohol, closer in spirit to 2021 or 2008 than to the riper 2022 and 2023. That classicism suits Batard, which gets its flesh onto a proper frame here rather than sprawling. Give it five years and drink it across the decade after that.

Burghound

"From a .13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 and located on the Chassagne side. Restrained and smoky aromas possess a plethora of floral elements that include those of carnation, acacia, lilac and rose petal, along with citrus confit and spice wisps. There is outstanding volume to the utterly delicious and tautly muscular flavors that display stunningly good persistence on the balanced, very dry and compact finale. Despite being clearly built-to-age, this actually quite an elegant Bâtard that should richly reward a decade plus of keeping. If you can find, don't hesitate."

"The 2024 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has quite a driven, minerally, slightly fumé nose that gently unfolds in the glass but remains on the reserved side. The palate is fresh on the entry with bright acidity. Not a powerful or broad-shouldered Bâtard, fresh and saline, though needing just a bit more sustain on the aftertaste. Drink over the next 15 years." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Morey-Coffinet

Thibault Morey tends vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and across the border in Puligny-Montrachet, pulling Chardonnay from some of Burgundy's most expressive terroirs. The Premier Crus Les Combettes and Les Pucelles taste like precision and age-worthiness. Martine's Wines brings these to America as the exclusive importer. Quiet excellence from a quiet corner of Burgundy that deserves more attention than it receives.
