Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is Pierre Usseglio's flagship: 100% Grenache from vines between 85 and 110 years old — the kind of fruit that barely exists anymore in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The parcels sit in Les Serres, Guigasse and La Crau, across sand, clay and the famous galets roulés, and the fruit goes into the tank as whole clusters with no destemming for a long fermentation of 30 to 45 days, then twelve months in half-muids and concrete rather than new barrels. That handling is why the wine tastes like old-vine Grenache instead of carpentry. 2016 is one of the great modern Southern Rhône vintages, ripe and generous but with the acid and tannin to hold, and at a decade old this bottle from a private cellar is just hitting its stride. Decant it an hour ahead; it should drink well for another decade.

"All Grenache, all whole cluster and from parcels in the lieux-dits of La Guigasse, Le Crau and Les Serres, the 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée de Mon Aieul has evolved beautifully since I tasted it last year, showing vibrant floral and tea-like notes, raspberry fruit and hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, rich and velvety, with overtones of spice cake on the long, crisp finish. Tasting it, I was surprised to find out what the alcohol level was, because it showed no obvious heat - a testament to how much else is going on here."

Blackberry and plum flavors are ripe but edged by cooling minerals and heady tones of garrigue, allspice and charcuterie. It's a rich, mouthcoating wine wrapped in fine, chalky tannins. Already irresistible it also has massive staying power."
