The modernist Clerico style meeting a cool, classical vintage, and now sitting right at the front edge of its drinking window. Domenico Clerico was one of the original Barolo Boys, who brought French barrique and shorter macerations into the Langhe, and Pajana is one of his flagships: a single-vineyard Barolo from inside the Ginestra MGA in Monforte d'Alba, planted in 1971 on Lequio-Serravallian marl, first bottled in 1990. Where his warmer vintages go plush, 2008 was a structured, perfumed, high-acid year, and that tension gives this bottle more lift and more road ahead than the riper Pajanas of the era. Domenico passed in 2017 and the estate carries on under Oscar Arrivabene, his longtime protege, which makes wines vinified by Domenico a closing chapter. From a private cellar, drinking beautifully now and comfortably good for another decade. Stand it upright, then decant an hour or two ahead.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2008 Barolo Pajana is surprisingly open and accessible in its fruit for a young Clerico Barolo, although the Nebbiolo tannins are of course quite prominent. It shows good plushness and generosity in its dark red fruit, mocha, spices, new leather, flowers and licorice, all of which flesh out on the supple finish. The visceral thrill of Clerico's best wines is missing." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

93 points

"The core of black cherry and licorice is surrounded by spicy oak in this modern-styled Barolo. Firm and fresh, featuring ample fruit to match the structure. The lingering aftertaste of mineral and berry catches a wave of acidity. Best from 2017 through 2038."

More about Domenico Clerico

Since 1976, Domenico Clerico has been pulling Barolo from the steep slopes around Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. His four legendary crus—Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana, Mosconi—sit on limestone soils that demand time and respect. At 21 hectares producing 110,000 bottles yearly, Clerico remains one of Piedmont's most respected voices. These are elegant Barolos, the way serious collectors understand them—structured, age-worthy, built to last decades.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, braised short ribs, agnolotti del plin in roasting juices, or roast guinea hen. The vintage's acidity also makes it a fine match for aged Castelmagno and hard alpine cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Dried cherry, rose, tar and licorice with cocoa and cedar spice from the barrique. Full-bodied and firm, with fine-grained tannins still present, vivid acidity, and a long, structured finish. Drinking well now and through the 2030s.
