This 2024 dry Riesling from Wachenheim represents Dönnhoff's exploration of the Pfalz region's distinctive terroir. The estate's commitment to single-vineyard expression and traditional winemaking extends to this site, where limestone-rich soils create wines of substance and mineral definition. The 2024 shows bright citrus with the Pfalz's characteristic richness—more body than typical Nahe wines from the same producer. Yet the wine maintains Dönnhoff's signature precision: focused acidity, clean minerality, and the freshness that distinguishes great German Riesling regardless of region. Ready to drink now or age for 6-8 years as the wine develops secondary complexity.

"The 2024 Riesling Wachenheim is the result of the 2024 frost in the Nahe. It was made from one hectare of Riesling on the Triassic sandstone of Wachenheim in the Pfalz that is farmed by Bürklin-Wolf. All three village wines were harvested by hand, crushed slightly, pressed at low pressure for two hours, sedimented overnight and fermented in Doppelstück. Its lovely flavor suggests a creamy touch of red apple. The palate has a lovely equanimity, a translucent, stony flow and the brightness of tart apple playing into the citrus." -Anne Krebiehl, MW

"Dönnhoff's 2024 Wachenheimer Riesling trocken VDP.Ortswein is sourced from two vineyards (Gerümpel and Rechbächel) from Dr Bürklin-Wolf in the Pfalz to help compensate for the dramatic losses suffered by the Dönnhoff family last spring due to frost. The vineyard has been cultivated by Bürklin, but the grapes were harvested and processed à la Dönnhoff in Oberhausen/Nahe. The wine is pure, refined and crystalline on the nose and has a 100% Dönnhoff character. Salinity and purity intertwine with ripe yellow fruit aromas and the character of colored sandstone. Round and juicy on the palate, this medium-bodied, more textured than crystalline dry Riesling has intense yellow plum flavors on the finish and aftertaste. The acidity is ripe and elegant, less savory and saline perhaps than in Niederhausen, Norheim or Schlossböckelheim but very elegant. Dönnhoff's first Pfalz Riesling is a fascinating case study inside the Dönnhoff world and doubtlessly an excellent Pfalz Riesling with Dönnhoff's signature. Let the wine breath for a while or at least give it some time to open up. 11.5% stated alcohol. Bottled and tasted in April this year." -Stephan Reinhardt

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
