One of Gevrey-Chambertin's most obsessive small domaines makes a rare trip down to the Cote de Beaune, and does it from Pinot Noir planted in 1946. Bernard Dugat and Jacqueline Py built their reputation on tiny yields, old vines and wines that need years, and their holding in La Levriere is a slim 0.78 hectares of a village lieu-dit in Pommard, on flatter ground toward the eastern side of the commune; the name refers to the stone quarried here for the Roman road running up from Chalon-sur-Saone. The estate has used organic preparations in the vineyard since 2003, ferments with native yeasts, and raises the wine sixteen to eighteen months in a high proportion of new oak before bottling it unfiltered. The 2020 growing season was hot and dry, giving small, thick-skinned berries and reds of unusual density and dark-fruited concentration. This is a vin de garde in the classic sense, built to be laid down. If you open one young, decant it well ahead.
