This is the Sandri Riserva for people who would rather not wait fifteen years. Elio Sandri farms 7.5 hectares at Cascina Disa in Monforte d'Alba's Perno cru and makes wine the way his neighbors' grandfathers did: cement fermentation, long aging in big Slavonian botti, no fining, no filtration, sulfur only at bottling. 2018 was a cooler, more classically proportioned year in Barolo, and the Riserva shows it, perfumed and red-fruited where the blockbuster vintages are dense, with tannins that are firm but already civil. This bottle reaches us from a private cellar, so it has been resting quietly since release. Nebbiolo of real transparency, from a grower whose wines tend to disappear on arrival.
