These are the vines Emidio planted himself, and they finally have their own bottle. Casa Pepe sits roughly 300 meters from the Branella parcel, close enough to look interchangeable but different enough that soil studies with geologist Brenna Quigley convinced the family to separate them starting with the 2020 vintage. The vines went into the ground in the 1970s, put there by Emidio. The method has not budged since 1964: certified biodynamic farming, hand destemming onto a net, spontaneous fermentation in concrete, aging in cement with no oak anywhere in the building, bottling unfiltered. It reads broader and deeper than Branella, dark and savory and built on serious structure. Buy two, drink one now with something charred, and forget the other for fifteen years.
