This is the wine that stopped people treating Trebbiano as a filler grape. Emidio Pepe's white comes from a variety usually condemned to anonymous bulk wine, farmed biodynamically on the family's Abruzzo hillsides and vinified with something close to willful simplicity: spontaneous fermentation, cement, no oak, no filtration, no tricks. Young, it is taut and saline and almost severe. Given time, and this estate's whites are famous for measuring their lives in decades rather than years, it turns waxy, honeyed and genuinely profound. If you can stand to wait, wait. If you cannot, decant it hard and put something rich in front of it.

"The 2022 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne is more savory than sweet, with a burst of crushed stone and raw almonds giving way to dusty dried flowers and apricots. This is texturally thrilling, soft and enveloping yet pure in style, with juicy acidity and masses of mineral-laced pit fruits, mixing nectarine with young peach. It tapers off long and with a pleasant inner tension, leaving a sensation of sweetness, yet clean and perfectly managed. The 2022 is drop-dead gorgeous.
