The granite outlier in Envínate's Lousas series. Rosende comes from a single slope of decomposed sandy granite — the only zone in Ribeira Sacra with granite soils, while the rest of the lineup sits on slate. The vines are 28-60 years old, the blend is roughly 85% Mencía with 15% old field-blend varieties (Garnacha Tintorera, Brancellao, Merenzao, Grao Negro). Envínate's four-winemaker team (Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, José Ángel Martínez) farms it without chemicals, ferments whole-cluster in open-top tanks for about 35 days, then ages it in a single foudre and a few used 228L barrels. The granite shows up in the glass: where the slate parcels are smoky and dusty, Rosende is more lifted, more taut, with a graphite-and-fennel edge. It lands stylistically between the village Aldea and the top single-parcel bottlings.

More about Envinate

Just a couple of years ago the wines of Envinate were very, very off the radar. Like everything in the world of delicious, naturally made wines, that has changed! Now we eagerly anticipate the next release, get just a case or less of each cuvée, and then watch them disappear in the blink of an eye.

For those unfamiliar, the group of four friends behind the project have nailed a locals' perspective on growing areas that the world is just coming to appreciate. Between Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands, they bottle clear expressions of the vineyards with which they work. Having started Envinate as a consultancy while in enology school, the friends set out to enrich the communities within these historically neglected areas. By splitting up and living in each of these regions, they have been able to foster relationships with older generations of growers and farmers allowing them to identify the best vineyard sites with a collective understanding beyond their experience.

With a strong technical education, The Four craft wines of precision and clarity. Never manipulated, never doctored, and a lack of chemicals in the vineyard, these wines are liquid art, a purists expression of terrior. They honor not only the region from which they come, but also the local stewards who have cared for these vineyards, often for generations.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A versatile partner for grilled sausages, roast chicken with herbs, or lamb skewers. Also great with mushroom risotto, grilled trout, or a board of charcuterie and semi-aged cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied, lifted, taut. Sour cherry, redcurrant, and pomegranate with notes of fennel, graphite, and a hint of smoke. Bright acidity, fine tannins, and a zippy, mineral finish that pulls long.
