Founded by Erin and Todd Brooks in 2012. Todd worked in California wine for 17 years before starting Ernest, including as director of winemaking at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. Named after Todd's grandfather Ernest, a WWII Navy veteran and Iowa farmer. The winery sources from family-farmed sites including Occidental, Sebastopol Hills, and Freestone (all Sonoma Coast). The Chardonnay is fermented in two-thirds concrete eggs and one-third neutral French oak, with minimal stirring and low sulfur throughout.

"Nervy aromas of tart pineapple and citrus dominate the nose of this zippy Chard, while flavors of green apple, nectarine, and tropical citrus come in waves across the palate, launched into hyperdrive by some punchy acids and a finish loaded with flavors of white flowers and salted lime peel." —Tom R. Capo

More about Ernest Vineyards

Though the term "Burgundian" seems to be thrown around a lot these days, I think here is a case in which it can accurately be applied. Ernest Vineyards has taken Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California and made wines that brilliantly express terroir. This is what Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast should be, along with a Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley, perfect for growing cold-climate grapes. Sure, there are others doing this, but what makes Ernest stand out is that they accomplish this without the high price tag this feat typically comes with.

Named for the patriarch of the extended family, Ernest Gottula, Ernest Vineyards strives to make wines that are terroir-expressive in their corner of northern California. They've meticulously sought out vineyards that experience sunny days and cool foggy nights, that also have sandy soils.

The winemaking approach is simple yet elegant; using a minimalist touch to draw out the purest expression of place from each wine. The family's philosophy is based on a commitment to integrity, restraint, and beauty. They use minimal oak and strive to produce wines that are high-acid and low-alcohol.
