Chassagne-Montrachet's reds are the village's standing bargain, and this one comes from a domaine best known for owning the largest parcel of Criots-Batard-Montrachet, the smallest white Burgundy grand cru. Celine Fontaine has run Fontaine-Gagnard since 2007, farming by lutte raisonnee with close attention to the soils, fermenting with indigenous yeasts, and keeping oak to a light touch -- roughly 20% new at the village level. The reds here are the sturdy, age-worthy kind rather than the frail sort Chassagne is sometimes accused of. 2017 gave the Cote de Beaune a generous crop after the frost-ravaged 2016 and produced supple, charming reds that came around early; at nine years this one sits right in the middle of its window. From a private cellar, ready to pour tonight.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"Pure aromas of pear, spices and menthol. Sweet, easygoing wine with fairly soft acidity but adequate cut to its ripe flavors of lemon drop and flowers. Finishes with good balance and persistence. This wine should offer early pleasure." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

90 points

"A cuvée that was produced from 1.7 hectares around the village and saw 20% new wood, the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Village exhibits pretty aromas of white flowers, lime zest, pear and subtle oak vanillin. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with nice concentration, an open and expressive core and a precise, chalky finish. This will drink very well out of the gates given its charming but classic profile." —William Kelley
