Verduno's most legendary cru, in a classical vintage, just entering its window. Monvigliero sits on a south-facing amphitheater above the village of Verduno — the cru that defines the appellation's perfumed, elegant style — and Fratelli Alessandria, Verduno's first family of Barolo, owns 1.4 hectares here. Vittore Alessandria vinifies with 20% whole-berry fermentation and ages three years in Slavonian botti, the old-school recipe. The 2013 is a textbook structured Barolo vintage, and twelve years on this wine is opening up beautifully: wild cherry, rose petal, dried herbs, tobacco and white pepper on the nose; layered red fruit, licorice and fine, silky tannins on the palate. The kind of Barolo you can drink now with a long carafe — or rest another decade plus.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"Alessandria's 2013 Barolo Monvigliero is a deep, sensual wine. Striking Monvigliero aromatics make a strong first impression in the classy, impeccably balanced Barolo. Pliant and deep in texture, with plenty of structure, the 2013 appears to be headed into a period of slumber from which it is not likely to awaken any time soon. Readers will have to be patient, but Alessandria's 2013 Monvigliero is a super-classic Barolo in the making." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 2013 Barolo Monvigliero opens to a glowing garnet color with bright ruby highlights (that will slowly fade and diminish as the wine continues its evolution). The bouquet is fresh and tonic with wild blueberry, lavender, violet and orange zest. You get many of those ethereal and elegant nuances so often associated with the versatile Nebbiolo grape. Keep this beautiful wine for the next 20 years or so." —Monica Larner

"Maturing mid ruby with orange tinges. A little candied but no doubt because it is a tank sample. Fragrant, fine and elegant leafy cherry-fruit palate. Lovely succulence and transparency and with a fine, tannic spine. Something for burgundy lovers."

Decanter

96 points

"Fratelli Alessandria's 1.4 hectares of this exceptional Verduno cru are positioned in a south facing amphitheatre. As with all of their Baroli, the Monvigliero is fermented with 20% whole berry fruit and aged for three years in Slavonian oak casks. Exotic spice, delicate lavender and lilac rise seductively from the glass. On the palate, wild strawberry and an underlying orange oil character marry seamlessly with long, fine tannins. Beyond the sheer finesse, there is sneaky density and persistence."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"A broad red, less expressive than its peers at this stage, offering latent cherry, plum and underbrush aromas and flavors. Mouthcoating tannins dominate the finish, but this stays balanced."

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"New leather, rose, violet, menthol and dark spice aromas set the tone on this luminous red. It’s more about finesse than muscle, delivering tight layers of juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, mint and white pepper while tightly-knit, ultra-refined tannins provide the taut framework. Bright acidity gives it intensity while a mineral note further lifts the finish. Give it time to soften and fully develop. Drink 2023–2043." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Fratelli Alessandria

Verduno's hidden gem. The Alessandria family has been making wine since 1830 (the name comes from a marriage, back when the place was called Fratelli Dabbene). Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pure Piedmont table: brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin, tajarin with butter and white truffle, roast guinea fowl, or aged Castelmagno. Open a few hours ahead in a carafe; sediment likely after 12 years.

Tasting Profile

Medium- to full-bodied, classical Nebbiolo. Wild cherry, rose petal, dried herbs, tobacco, white pepper and a quiet balsamic lift. Tannins fine and silky, acidity bright. Just entering the drinking window; will hold and improve another decade-plus.
