2010 is the Brunello vintage collectors put away and forget about on purpose; fifteen years on, it is finally beginning to show what the fuss was about. Fuligni is one of Montalcino's most historic estates, anchored on higher-elevation ground in the cooler northeastern sector of the zone, where Maria Flora Fuligni has long held to a traditional path of long aging in large neutral Slavonian botti. The Riserva tier sees additional time in cask and bottle before release, and in a benchmark vintage like 2010 it produces Sangiovese of unusual depth and longevity. This bottle is just beginning its real drinking window and will continue to evolve gracefully through the decade.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is earthy upon first tilt of the glass, mixing flowery underbrush and worn leather. Yet it slowly unwinds with time, adding depths of dried black cherry, plum and sage. This is seamlessly silky and serene, displaying remarkable balance as a wave of ripe fruits and sweet spice flow across the palate with ease, giving way to a tug of grippy tannins toward the close. A bump of residual acidity maintains marvelous freshness as the 2010 tapers off long, structured and spicy with a hint of sous-bois. As pleasurable as this is today, the 2010 is still maturing in bottle, displaying a primary concentration that will carry it for decades—bravo." —Eric Guido

Robert Parker

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wine that shows immense harmony and inner poise. The powerful vintage is elegantly tempered in this expression thanks to the flowing and musical nature of the aromatic presentation. The bouquet opens to a steady pace with small berry nuances followed by spice, tobacco, pressed rose and moist earth. Dig deep and there is a bit of white truffle in there as well. The wine boasts a silky texture with a lean, tonic feel that excels in terms of length and persistence. It never feels too heavy or flat. In fact, the wine is brimming with inner energy and vitality." —Monica Larner

"Mid-to-light bricky red. Intense and complex aroma of dried cherries, tea leaf, sweet spice and savoury mushrooms. Lots of mature undergrowth, the tannins now finely resolved, even though this will clearly age even longer. Great balance and freshness, still powerful and very long."

Decanter

"This is intense throughout – minty and meaty with exotic spice, saffron and tobacco. Tannins are upfront and powdery in this decidedly linear and imposing Riserva. Mineral-driven palate with crushed stone and iron notes persisting on the long, relentless finish. It is somewhat confounding as the aromas invite drinking, yet the structure is still austere. It is difficult not to be a bit awestruck. The 2010 is a classic example of September making the vintage. After a late start to the growing season and a mediocre summer, the long lead up to the relatively late harvest was ideal."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Saturated with ripe cherry, plum, dusty cocoa, tobacco and tea aromas and flavors. The solid tannins provide support but don't get in the way of the fruit and savory components. Finishes long and expansive."

Kerin O'Keefe

"The nose is still a bit closed but eventually reveals black-skinned berry, dark spice, iris and a whiff of tilled soil. The palate is more expressive and downright delicious, offering juicy black cherry, raspberry jam, cinnamon and a touch of exotic spice. Firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide the framework while a licorice note closes the lingering finish. Drink 2020–2032." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragu over pici, or roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary. Aged Pecorino Toscano and a drizzle of good olive oil also do nicely once the bottle has been open a while.

Tasting Profile

Dried cherry, balsamic-edged plum, leather, tobacco leaf, and sweet Tuscan herbs. The palate is structured and savory, with the powdery, chalky tannins that mark great traditional Brunello, carrying a long finish of dried rose and tea leaf. Decant ahead.
