Les Cras is the muscle of the Barthod range, and 2012 is the vintage that earns it. A cold, damp spring, ragged flowering and relentless mildew cut the Cote de Nuits crop hard, then fine weather from late August ripened what was left in a hurry, giving small yields, dense fruit and a real tannic frame. Ghislaine Barthod's 0.86-hectare parcel sits on the upper part of the slope just above the village, on the same band of hill that carries Bonnes-Mares and directly south of Les Fuees, where thin white soil loaded with active calcium gives Chambolle's perfume a stony spine. In the cellar she does very little: partial destemming, native-yeast fermentation and about twenty months in barrel with roughly a quarter new oak. This magnum comes from a private cellar, and the format has slowed everything down. At fourteen years it is only now unwinding, with a good decade in front of it; give it an hour in a decanter.

There is an almost palpable sense of minerality on the precise, intense and vibrant middle weight flavors that possess a suave yet firm mouth feel before concluding in a palate coating, saline and moderately austere finish. "Healthy medium red. Pure, reticent aromas of kirsch, licorice and calcaire minerality; less expressive in the early going than the Veroilles or Fuées. Then hugely concentrated and compellingly sweet in the mouth, but with outstanding sappy energy to the flavors of black raspberry, minerals and peach pit. Offers a near-perfect balance between flesh and mineral energy.
