2014 is the Cote de Nuits vintage the Burgundy trade quietly hoards: classic, taut, red-fruited, built on acidity rather than flesh. The June hail that flattened stretches of the Cote de Beaune left Chambolle untouched, and a cool, clear late summer gave wines of genuine tension and fine-grained tannin. Ghislaine Barthod bottles eleven different Chambolle premier crus and owns no grand cru at all, and Les Cras is the most structured of them: 0.86 hectares on the upper slope above the village, thin white soil high in active calcium, sharing its band of hill with Bonnes-Mares. Partial destemming, wild-yeast fermentation and roughly twenty months in barrel with 20 to 25 percent new oak keep the site legible. This one is in magnum, from a private cellar, and a vintage with this much acid backbone ages very slowly in the big format. Expect it to be drinking beautifully well into the 2030s.

"A broad-ranging, fresh and once again airy nose reluctantly reveals notes of cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, rose petal and soft spice and sandalwood nuances. The strikingly elegant and refined medium-bodied flavors seem to be built on a base of minerality before terminating in a wonderfully intense, saline and focused finale that delivers flat out stunning length. This moderately austere effort is very clearly built-to-age and it would be completely pointless to open a bottle before at least a decade has passed."

"Medium red. Sexy oak spices complement aromas of strawberry, rose petal, licorice and earth. Large-scaled, concentrated, creamy and rich; wonderfully generous and layered for the vintage, with its red fruit and spice flavors conveying captivating sweetness. This very young wine finishes with big, ripe tannins and terrific saline persistence. Some day this will be magnificent at the dinner table. "Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Ghislaine Barthod's 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Cras has a slightly leathery, animally bouquet, but behind that is plenty of gutsy red fruit laced with pressed flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite Morey-Saint-Denis in style in terms of structure, with a slightly tarry finish that needs more elegance to show through. I am certain that it will with time; indeed, the wine appeared to rapidly improve and gain cohesion in the glass as it aerated. Tasted September 2017." —Neal Martin
