Barthod's most powerful cru in one of the ripest vintages of its decade, which makes this the biggest-shouldered wine she has made in years. A dry, sunny 2015 summer with cool nights gave small, thick-skinned, impeccably healthy berries and reds that came out rich and statuesque without surrendering their acidity. In Les Cras that reads as unusual weight for Chambolle: 0.86 hectares on the upper slope above the village, thin white soil packed with active calcium, the same seam of hill as Bonnes-Mares. Her hand in the cellar stays deliberately light, with partial destemming, native yeasts, around twenty months in barrel and 20 to 25 percent new oak, so the vintage's flesh sits on top of the stone rather than burying it. From a private cellar. Top 2015s can go quiet for a stretch, so give this a long decant now or leave it alone until the early 2030s.

"Fresh aromas of black raspberry, cherry, cassis and a hint of the exotic complement perfectly the ripe yet cool and ultra-intense mineral-driven flavors that possess a borderline pungent salinity while delivering outstanding depth and length on the beautifully well-balanced finale. This is a bit less youthfully austere than usual but it's still definitely built-to-age and is going to need at least 7 to 8 years first. Terrific."

"The 2015 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Cras, which has just a tiny reduction, has a very pure, mulberry and raspberry preserve-scented bouquet, quite intense with fine mineralité, perhaps not quite as detailed as the Veroilles. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a mixture of red and black fruit, just a suggestion of cassis, all with superb salinity and a silver bead of acidity. Lovely length in the mouth, this is a sensual Le Cras destined to give two decades of drinking pleasure." —Neal Martin
