The frost of April 2016 hit Chambolle-Musigny harder than almost any commune in the Cote de Nuits, which is why so little of this wine exists and why the little that does is so good. A single savage frost on the night of 26 April took out much of the crop, mildew took more, and then the weather turned fine from late June through a September harvest, concentrating what survived into a wine that is classical, tightly knit and unusually mineral even by the standards of Les Cras. Barthod's 0.86-hectare parcel occupies the upper slope just above the village on thin, chalk-white soil high in active calcium, the most structured and stony of the eleven premier crus she bottles. Partial destemming, native-yeast fermentation and about twenty months in barrel with roughly a quarter new oak. This is a private-cellar bottle: floral and fine with a long decant today, but the real payoff is 2030 and beyond.

"A cool, reserved and intensely floral nose is gorgeously spiced, indeed this is the spiciest wine in the range, with its ripe red and blue berry fruit aromas that offer up attractive floral notes. The equally cool and restrained medium weight flavors possess excellent structural ripeness as well as fine size, weight and power on the intense, harmonious and mouth coating finish. This tautly muscular effort is a classic Les Cras that is stylish, classy and should age beautifully and note well that it's going to need it. Brilliant."

"The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru offers red berry fruit laced with minerals, fine definition and seamlessly integrated new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, very cohesive with exactly the right amount of grip and weight on the finish. This is a well executed Chambolle-Musigny but I noticed that it dries out in the glass. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting." —Neal Martin

"Les Cras is another of the highlights in the Barthod cellar this year, bursting from the glass with a projected bouquet of red cherry, orange rind, redcurrant and violets. On the palate the wine is simply stunning, with superb concentration, an almost electric sense of tension and energy, bottomless depth, and a profound streak of chalky minerality which carries through the long and penetrating finish. Barthod’s vines here lie in the point of Les Cras as it approaches the village of Chambolle, and the soils here are white - high in active calcium in comparison to the redder clays found on the Fuées side of the vineyard."
