Les Fuees is the Barthod bottling that borrows from the grand cru next door. Her 0.26-hectare parcel of vines now past seventy years old lies along the south-west border of Bonnes-Mares on the same oolitic limestone, with barely any topsoil over the rock, and the wine layers Chambolle's floral lift onto a deeper, earthier core you don't find in her other crus. 2011 was a cool, early-picked year that produced fresh, aromatic, transparent reds rather than powerful ones, and the Cote de Nuits handled it considerably better than the Cote de Beaune. Ghislaine took full control of the family domaine in 1999 on the death of her father Gaston, and works with a very light touch: partial destemming, native yeasts, about twenty months in barrel with restrained new oak. From a private cellar, and at fifteen years fully resolved. This is the bottle to open while the sterner vintages sit.

"Here the nose offers the most complexity of any wine to this point with its well-layered and broad aromas of plum, violet, dark cherry and wet stone. There is a beguiling velvety texture to the mineral-driven flavors that benefit amply from the presence of plenty of mouth coating dry extract before concluding in a firm and overtly mineral-inflected finish. This will also require patience."

"Good bright, full red. Cool aromas of black cherry, menthol, minerals and peppery herbs. A step up in texture and fleshiness from the Charmes, but still savory and dry, with lovely cut and peppery lift. I like the balance of ripe fruit and peppery spices here. Finishes with suave tannins, noteworthy finesse and lovely subtle, lingering sweetness." —Stephen Tanzer

"Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées is more surly and introspective on the nose compared to Patrice Rion’s with dank cellar scents infusing the black fruit. With continued aeration there are touches of juniper berry and sloe. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins and good acidity. Quite succulent in the mouth with impressive purity, I would just like to see this develop more charm on the finish, but there is certainly good potential here. Long-term." —Neal Martin

"Pretty dark ruby. Sweet start and marked acidity. Hint of chestnuts but real life and animation here. Plus some relatively luscious fruit."
