Vines past seventy years old, planted right against the south-west edge of Bonnes-Mares, in a vintage tailor-made for exactly that kind of site. Barthod's 0.26-hectare sliver of Les Fuees sits on the same oolitic limestone as the grand cru beside it with almost no topsoil covering the rock, which is why the wine marries Chambolle's floral top note to an earthy, savory depth her other premier crus don't offer. 2013 was cold and wet through spring, halved the crop and forced picking into October, and the resulting reds are graceful and high-toned with light tannins and beautiful lift, with Chambolle among the vintage's clear winners. Partial destemming, wild yeasts and roughly twenty months in barrel with about a quarter new oak. A private-cellar bottle drinking gorgeously right now and good for another five years or so.

Antonio Galloni

"Bright red. Ripe, nuanced nose combines maraschino cherry, menthol and crushed rock; at once slightly medicinal and a bit liqueur-like. Wonderfully sweet and tangy on entry, showing sexy sucrosité, then much more serious and unevolved on the back half, finishing with strong mineral-driven acidity and building tannins. Dry, classic wine with terrific verve." —Stephen Tanzer

"Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées is slightly disjointed on the nose with earthy red berry fruit, autumn leaves and a touch of soy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, a little foursquare perhaps but there is plenty of freshness from start to finish. I would have just appreciated more weight and presence and it feels pinched at present. It seems to have dipped since I tasted it from barrel -- a sullen phase perhaps? Tasted September 2016." —Neal Martin
