The rarest thing in the Barthod range: a 0.37-hectare sliver of Les Veroilles, high on the slope immediately above Bonnes-Mares, which was elevated to premier cru in 1987 while the rest of the climat remained village Chambolle. Barthod holds all of the promoted ground, so this is effectively a monopole at the premier cru level, and it is the darkest and most brooding wine she makes, stricter in its minerality and slower to open than her Fuees or Cras. The domaine began life in the late 1920s as Barthod-Noellat and today runs to just 5.86 hectares, worked parcel by parcel with partial destemming, native yeasts and roughly twenty months in barrel. 2014 was a classical Cote de Nuits vintage of firm acidity and fine tannin, which suits this cool, stony site perfectly. A private-cellar bottle: decant generously if you open it now, or let it run to 2032.

"In what is a consistent theme with the Barthod 2014s the aromatic profile is quite cool and airy with a nose that closely resembles that of the Fuées but with even more floral influences and perhaps a bit less spice. As is often the case with this wine it is youthfully restrained and backward with a pungent minerality adding lift to the almost painfully intense flavors that culminate in a racy, refreshing and moderately austere finale. In the same vein as the Fuées this will definitely require extended bottle age before being ready for prime time."

"Good full red. Liqueur-like redcurrant and red cherry plus an earthy nuance on the very ripe nose. Sweet, creamy and very smooth in the middle palate, offering very ripe, slightly high-toned flavors of strawberry and raspberry. "The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Véroilles has a perfumed and floral bouquet with touches of violet infusing the red berry fruit, complex and engaging, more mercurial in the glass - perhaps a Chambolle with secrets to covet. The palate is very supple and silky in texture, and there is wonderful, saturated tannin here matched with a sorbet-like freshness and great precision towards the tender finish.
