1996 was one of Barolo's great structured, high-acid vintages, and three decades have finally let its tannins relax, which is precisely the reason to open this now. San Stefano di Perno is the western flank of the large Perno hill in Monforte d'Alba, a hilltop site with vines falling away in every direction over Diano sandstone, and it gives rounder, more fruit-forward Barolo than the commune's sterner exposures, which is exactly the counterweight a vintage this austere needed. Manzone no longer bottles this cru at all; the estate's Barolos today are Gramolere, Bricat and Castelletto, so these are wines from a closed chapter of the family's history. The Manzones have farmed this corner of Monforte since the late nineteenth century and have never left tradition behind, with long fermentation on the skins, roughly thirty months in large Slavonian casks, no new oak, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. From a private cellar. Stand it upright for a day or two, decant carefully off what will be considerable sediment, and drink over the next several years.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Bricat. Sweet Burgundian aromas of plum, cherry and nuts. Silky-sweet, suave and voluptuous, with seductively warm, low-toned flavors framed by the wine sound vinosity. Quite rich and currently hiding its tannins." —Stephen Tanzer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised oxtail, tajarin with a slow-cooked ragù, roast pheasant, or aged Parmigiano and walnuts.

Tasting Profile

Fully tertiary: dried rose, dried cherry, forest floor, leather, tar and orange peel. Medium-bodied, with the vintage's bright acidity still driving and tannins gone fine and dusty. Savory, echoing finish.
