1985 is one of the reference Napa Cabernet vintages, and this is a perfectly cellared bottle of it. The season was moderate and dry with no heat spikes, so growers could pick on their own schedule; the wines came in with restrained alcohol, firm structure and the balance that has let them run for decades. Grgich Hills was still young then — Mike Grgich and Austin Hills founded the Rutherford winery in 1977 — and in 1984 the estate added the Yountville property whose Cabernet vines had been planted back in 1959. Grgich's hand was always classical rather than showy, which is a large part of why bottles like this are still standing forty years on. This one was bought from a private cellar rather than released by the winery. It is mature and fully resolved now, with several good years ahead of it: stand the bottle upright for a couple of days, decant carefully off the sediment, and let it open slowly in the glass.

Robert Parker

72 points

"Until now, this wine has merited scores in the upper eighties. In this tasting, the wine possessed a dirty, earthy, musty wood character, astringent, high acidity, tough, hard tannin, and absolutely no fruit. I suspect this had to have been a bad bottle." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Grgich Hills

Mike Grgich made the legendary '73 Montelena Chardonnay that beat Burgundy at Paris in '76. Founded Grgich Hills in Rutherford in 1977, still makes Chardonnay that matters. Five estate vineyards, organic from the start (no artificial anything). Regenerative Organic Certified 2023—one of a handful worldwide. The legend delivers.
