Gunderloch, Riesling Pettenthal Grosses Gewachs, 2018

From the steep, red slate slopes of the Pettenthal vineyard overlooking the Rhine, Gunderloch’s Grosses Gewächs bottling is a benchmark dry Riesling—bold, structured, and built to last. The 2018 vintage brought warmth and ripeness, but Johannes Hasselbach's steady hand kept the wine focused and precise, layering richness with minerality rather than letting it tip into excess.

Expect ripe apricot, peach skin, and lemon oil, underscored by warm stone, white tea, and a flicker of smoke. The palate is powerful yet tightly coiled, with a dense core of fruit and a long, salty finish. It’s drinking well now with air, especially alongside roasted pork, spicy dishes, or aged cheeses—but it’s built for the long haul. A serious Rheinhessen GG that wears its sun-kissed vintage with elegance and control.

Antonio Galloni

"Unsurprisingly for a Riesling from this site, lemon and tangerine, with prominence of their zests and seeds, dominate nose and palate. Leaner in feel than the corresponding Hipping, this resonates and grips with remarkable tenacity – its piquancy matched by adhesive stony, smoky and alkaline elements – while delivering enough animating juiciness to keep the penetratingly persistent finish from turning outright austere." —David Schildknecht

Robert Parker

"The 2018 Riesling trocken Pettenthal GG opens with a generous and intense yet pure, flinty, terroir-driven nose of ripe fruit that is still cool and Riesling-ish. Round and intense on the palate, this is a dense, juicy, well-structured and linear dry Riesling with serious grip and mineral freshness. It has an intense and persistently salty finish. Ascetic style. 12.5% alcohol." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach took over this Rheinhessen stalwart in 2016 and immediately started making them drier, more mineral, lower in alcohol. That's the move. The Rothenberg vineyard—which they own sixty-five percent of—produces some of Germany's finest Riesling: structured, age-worthy, full of yellow fruit and the kind of acidity that makes food sing.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
