Immich-Batterieberg, Riesling Reserve Zeppwingert, 2018

A dry Riesling made from over-100-year-old ungrafted vines on just two terraces of Zeppwingert, picked at a tiny yield of little golden berries and raised in a single 300-liter cask for two years on its full lees — one barrel's worth of the estate's oldest plantings. Zeppwingert is the dark grey slate cru that wraps around the famous Batterieberg on the hillside, and it's where Gernot Kollmann finds the deepest roots and the firmest, most powerfully built wines on the property; it's no accident that this is the site he reserves for his Réserve bottlings. The estate calls this the essence of great dry Mosel wine, and for once that's not marketing — the vine age, the yield and the lees time all point the same direction. Kollmann works with ambient yeast and almost nothing else, so what's in the glass is slate and old vines rather than cellar technique. Wines from these Enkirch slopes are famously long-lived. If you buy Mosel Riesling for depth and spice rather than sweetness, this is the bottle.

More about Immich-Batterieberg

One of the Mosel's oldest wineries, founded by monastery in 911 and traced to documented viticulture back then. Gernot Kollmann bought in 2008 and immediately went full-dry: ambient yeasts, full fermentations, minimal sulfur, five steep vineyards with names like Batterieberg (created literally by explosives in the 1840s). Profoundly dry Riesling made by somebody who thinks.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, pork schnitzel, seared scallops with brown butter, smoked trout, Alsatian onion tart, aged Comté, or Sichuan dry-fried chicken where the spice needs a dry, high-acid white.

Tasting Profile

Fully dry and concentrated, with great depth and spice, fine and elegant. Firmly and powerfully built, with a texture drawn from the long lees aging. The finish is long and mineral rather than fruity.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
