A textbook NSG from a small, traditionalist Nuits domaine — now in its prime drinking window. Domaine Jean Chauvenet was founded in 1969 and has been run since 1994 by Christine Chauvenet (Jean's daughter) and her husband Christophe Drag, working low-intervention across nine hectares. The Rue de Chaux 1er Cru sits on the village side of Nuits-Saint-Georges, named for the road climbing to Chaux in the Hautes-Côtes, and Chauvenet's tiny parcel was planted in 1930 — true old vines. Elevage is classical: 18 months in barrel with around 20% new oak, no fining, no filtration. 2015 is the warm, ripe, structured Burgundy vintage now hitting its first plateau of maturity. The kind of NSG that reminds you why the appellation has a cult following.

"Moderate wood influence surrounds the ultra-fresh if somewhat somber aromas of black cherry, plum, earth and once again a whiff of the sauvage. There is a distinct sense of restraint to the cool, precise and concentrated middle weight flavors that also evidence a sleek muscularity to the lingering, complex and built-to-age finish. This is a powerful and notably serious effort that is most impressive though I underscore that it will not be an enticing candidate for early consumption." —Allen Meadows

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Mature NSG country — coq au vin, beef Bourguignon, roast duck with cherries, mushroom risotto, gibier in season. Aged hard cheeses (Comté, Tomme) and rare-roasted leg of lamb also sing.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, beet, dried rose and forest floor with a streak of iron-rich earth that's pure Nuits. Tannins are fine and resolving, acidity bright, the finish savoury and lifted. Drinking beautifully now.
