This Mosel Riesling carries the pedigree of two legendary winemakers—Julian Haart trained under both Egon Müller and Klaus Peter Keller, the titans of German winemaking. From the dramatic Piesporter Goldtröpchen amphitheater, carved into dark Devonian slate, Haart coaxes wines of playful elegance and depth. The 2016 vintage showcased nature’s drama—a difficult spring followed by miraculous recovery—and the result is a Kabinett of remarkable balance: moderate sweetness, crystalline acidity, and gorgeous minerality. At a decade old, it has evolved into something magnificent without losing its youthful soul.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Picked at 82 Oechsle (precisely midway between the must weights registered for the 2014 and 2015) this delicate Kabinett successfully balances 59 grams of residual sugar against a highly efficacious (and, for this vintage, unusually high) nine grams of acidity. Some post-fermentative “Mosel stink” in one of the two bottles I sampled did not completely clear – at least, not in the couple of hours I had available to follow it – but the other was immediately expressive of site-typical lemon, grapefruit and cassis, alluringly wreathed in honeysuckle. The polished, buoyant palate introduces stimulating nips of cress and a mouthwatering lick of salt, both of which continue on a refreshingly sustained, brightly animating and infectiously juicy finish. By now there isn’t any question: Julian Haart is a master of Kabinett." —David Schildknecht

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
