What is this wine?
Karthäuserhof’s Riesling Karthäuserhofberg Grosses Gewächs 2022 is a dry, single-vineyard Riesling from the estate’s historic monopole, the Karthäuserhofberg, in the Ruwer Valley of the Mosel. This Grand Cru–level site, planted on steep slopes of blue Devonian slate, has been producing world-class Riesling since the 14th century. The grapes are hand-harvested from the oldest vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged on fine lees in stainless steel to preserve purity and tension.

Why get this wine?
As one of Germany’s oldest and most storied estates, Karthäuserhof crafts wines of striking elegance and longevity. The 2022 Grosses Gewächs represents the pinnacle of their dry Riesling—concentrated, mineral, and impeccably balanced. This vintage combines crystalline fruit with a fine, saline edge, showcasing the precision and intensity that make Ruwer Rieslings some of the most refined in the Mosel. A collector’s wine with decades of life ahead.

What does this wine taste like?
Focused and complex, with aromas of lime zest, white peach, and crushed slate. The palate is taut and linear, offering citrus, herbs, and flinty minerality, framed by electric acidity and a long, saline finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Beautiful young for its tension but best from 2026–2045 as it gains depth. Pair with oysters, grilled fish, or aged goat cheese. Serve well-chilled.

"The 2022 Riesling Karthäuserhofberg Grosses Gewächs comes from the single parcel Kronenberg at the top of the Karthäuserhofberg. An ethereal note of lemon appears ahead of a gentle creaminess and more air adds hayflower. The palate already has a balm-like smoothness with a light body, edged by a slight pithiness that almost attains a sense of dried lemon peel. All is gentle with lovely fluidity." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Karthauserhof

Rooted in the Ruwer Valley since 1335 when Carthusian monks planted the first vines, Karthäuserhof is the eighth-oldest winery in the world. Today, Albert Behler stewards 19 hectares of red Devonian slate, producing mineral Rieslings—mostly dry—aged on old rootstock. This is history that tastes like terroir.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
