Alex Starey has long been one of our favorite South African winemakers, and Keermont — his mountain estate high on the Helderberg in Stellenbosch — is one of the country's quietly great addresses. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes off the Cottage Lane vineyard, perched at 320 meters on the Helderberg's mid-slopes; the elevation, exposure, and clay soils give Starey a fine-grained, naturally tense version of South African Cab. The 2021 is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, raised for 21 months in seasoned French barriques before hand-bottling. Restrained, structured, terroir-driven Stellenbosch Cab — exactly the kind of wine that's putting the Helderberg on serious collectors' radar.

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with a touch of Cabernet Franc, comes from a parcel opposite the Steepside vineyard, with these vines planted in 2006. This has a finely detailed bouquet with blackberry, briar and a dash of white pepper. There is almost something Rhône-like about this cuvée! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, revealing plenty of dark red berry fruit intermixed with white pepper, garrigue and graphite. Possessing fine length, this is a deftly made Cabernet doing a delicious impression of a Syrah!" —Neal Martin

Tasting Profile

Aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, dried herbs, and graphite. Medium- to full-bodied with mountain-cool tension — concentrated cassis fruit, fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, savory, mineral-edged finish. Built for the cellar, drinking well now with air.
