The top of the range from Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne — and 2021 was his very first vintage, a short-crop year when most negociants couldn't buy fruit at all. He managed it on relationships alone, built over eight years at Domaine Leflaive and the biodynamic consulting company he founded in 2016. The fruit here comes from the upper section of the Charmes climat, the "Dessus" half on a gentle slope, from Chardonnay planted in the 1950s. Antoine owns no vines; what he brings is method — whole-cluster pressing on a Vaslin press, and, as at the house generally, a deliberate mix of barrel, foudre and amphora chosen so the elevage stays in the background and the site does the talking. Les Charmes is one of Meursault's great premier crus, and this is a serious expression of it from a name that arrived fully formed.

"The 2019 Syrah leads with graphite and steel, blackberry, blood plum and cherry. In the mouth, the wine is elegant and refined, as we have come to expect from Hiro Kusuda. This wine has a distinct autumn leaf, black truffle character, and knowing how gracefully they age, it is barely at the beginning of its life. There is much to give, and the length of flavor tells us everything else that we need to know. Super wine. Quite distinct, with arnica and alpine mint woven through the finish. It’s gently dusty, spicy and voluminous in its way, with elegance and restraint writ large. A pleasure. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under 54-millimeter natural cork." —Erin Larkin
