Cesanese del Piglio is Lazio's only DOCG, an appellation dedicated to the indigenous Cesanese grape grown in the hills southeast of Rome. La Visciola is a small producer in this area working to revive interest in this ancient variety, which has been cultivated in the region since at least the 13th century. The name "PrioreJu Lattaro" references local heritage. Cesanese produces wines unlike anything else in Italy—medium-bodied with a distinctive combination of sour cherry fruit, herbal notes, and a slightly rustic, earthy character that speaks of its volcanic and limestone soils. This is genuine Italian terroir wine, perfect for exploring alongside Roman cuisine: carbonara, cacio e pepe, or roasted lamb. An adventure for anyone tired of the usual suspects.
