Cesanese, the near-forgotten native red of Lazio, at its most drinkable: Vicinale is La Visciola's village-level bottling, raised entirely in stainless steel, so nothing gets between you and the grape. It comes from 45- to 60-year-old vines on red clay at 340 to 400 meters in the hills of Piglio, southeast of Rome, where Piero Macciocca and Rosa Alessandri have spent two decades rescuing a variety that had nearly been abandoned. The family's vines have seen nothing but copper and sulfur since the 1960s, and the farming went fully biodynamic in 2005. Native-yeast fermentation, a minimum of a year in tank before bottling, unfined and unfiltered. 2023 was a wet, mildew-plagued season across central Italy that cut yields hard, and what came through here is lifted and savory rather than dense. Serve it with a slight chill, the way they do in Piglio.

Piero Macciocca and his wife Rosa started this 4.5-hectare project in Lazio in 2005 to resurrect the Cesanese grape. Now biodynamic-certified, they work a tiny garage winery with real discipline.
