Perrieres is the Meursault Premier Cru that plays it straight: where Genevrieres goes opulent and exotic, Perrieres is stony and taut, and the name tells you why — perrieres means stone quarries, and the vineyard sits on thin soil over hard limestone rubble at the Puligny end of the village. Latour-Giraud is a family estate that has been in Meursault since the late 1600s, took its present name when the Latours and the Girauds married in 1958, and is run today by Jean-Pierre Latour, who works the soil without herbicides as his father did and aims for purity and precision with some richness behind it. Their Perrieres holding is a small one, dwarfed by the Genevrieres block the domaine is famous for, which makes it the harder of the two to find. 2018 was a warm, generous vintage in the Cote de Beaune, and that suits this site — the ripeness puts flesh on a cru that can be severe in youth, while the limestone keeps the whole thing tense. Drinking well now, with years ahead of it.
